Wonderful information.

I would like to know more about the book that was kept in Thuruthy church. Is it completely lost ? I feel very sad about it. Can we make any efforts to reproduce those by asking the older generation who remember the lyrics. I hope that you have done some efforts in this line that you have published a few of them here in this blog. Thank you very much for your efforts and I appreciate your love for our rich traditions.

Is it possible to get those sung by someone in line with the recent work of Rev Dr Joseph Palackal- Qambel Maran ?

Can you transliterate those lyrics into English or malayalam and make it available here ?

Why do you think that some of them are created during the latin suppression period of Syro Malabar Church ? Is it the lyrics or the the subject or the tune that make you think so?

It is true that some of our syriac chants are created later by the latin missionaries to introduce certain latin practices by translating them to syriac. The syriac chants prevalent among the Thomas Christians of Malabar can be broadly divided into three groups-
1 The ancient chants of East Syriac Church
2 The Chants introduced by the Syro Antiochien Church after the 16th century
3 The chants created by the Latin missionaries.

See this link

Here are some examples of latin chants translated into Syriac that I have come across from the work of Rev Dr Joseph Palackal.

1 Quryelaison- from the ladinj of latin church.
2Ha Qes Sliwa- sung on good friday
3 Sambah lesan- translation of the first two stanzas of latin hymn Pange Lingua
4 Kollan Dasne-last two stanzas of Pange Lingua
5 Ta lak Ruha- syriacised Latin chant vene creator spiritus
6 Slam lek-syriacised latin chant salve regina
7 Lak mar Yawsep

Thanks for this informative article and your efforts to preserve them. I expect more from you here.

Yes, Thomas Antony, My understanding is that we lost all of them. I am thinking of collecting and reproducing songs.

I have seen Joseph Palackal's qumbel Maran, I don't think it is complete. I have trying to translate them as well.

By saying that it could be of the latin suppression period I am just thinking of a possibility. "Mother of God" is certainly not a usage of us.
